About Project

"Farm based income through creation and renovation of Diversion Based Irrigation structures and promotion of agriculture extension activities" is the most ambitious and recently started project of Gramya Vikash Mancha, supported by Sir Dorabji TATA trust (2.91 Crore) under DBI Phase III initiative (Diversion base irrigation) to continue the glorious legacy of DBI phase I and phase II. The main objective of this project is to ensure economic and food security of poor and marginalize farmers by enhancing community action through sustainable and proper Irrigation Infrastructure Development. Furthermore, ensuring sustainable growth of farmers by empowering them to lead the change process with the help of Capacity Building, Agricultural Development, Revenue Generation etc. are also some important aspects of the project. This project will include approximately 1815 farmer’s household, covering 52 villages in 8 clusters, namely, Jaha, Chaulkhowa, Pagaldiya, Baraliya, Tamulpur, Diring, Motonga and Satdola of three different districts (Nalbari, Kamrup Rural and Baksa). The whole project activities can be categorize under three broad thematic areas as follows-

Capacity Building:
This is primary factor for successful implementation of all project interventions. For this purpose we have organized various community awareness generation programs on sharing project objectives as well as give training on need of form People’s collectives, like, WUG, PG, PC etc. and its role & responsibility. After sensitization programs, as per necessity, priority and community’s demand we will do PVA(Participatory Vulnerability Analysis) to sort out the problems and its prospective solutions suggested by the communities. Subsequently we will do Baseline survey including technical issues, which is an effective tool for scope and feasibility study. Final we organize training programs on promoting agri-horticultural product which are most profitable for farmers and also give technical training for managing and maintaining the constructed infrastructure. Simultaneously, arranged exposure visit to various agro farms which are perfectly blending new technologies and modern way of farming; which boost up their level of motivation and adoption of those ways of farming.

Irrigation infrastructure Development:
After successfully build up the capacities of farmers for promoting sustainable livelihood through most profitable agri-horticultural products; we need to construct necessary irrigation infrastructures as per priority of community’s demand. For smooth diversion and channelization of water in to agricultural fields; experts of respective field make Survey, Design and Estimation of all proposed structures, so that we can maintain the equilibrium of ecology. Moreover, we give special care for restoration of water bodies in order maintain natural flow through the structures. Finally we construct necessary structures like, check bundh, Pakka canal, brick liner water with canal structure, naodwara (diversion based water over bridge), earthen canal with structure for diversion of water, earthen canal without structure etc.

Agricultural Development:
This is one of the most important components of the project. Under this apparatus we make House Hold wise Crop planning and POP (package of practices) for all targeted beneficiaries. Simultaneously we provide Soil Health Card for better agri-horticultural output. There are provisions of input Support for 0.5 acre Remunerative Model based on Agro-Horti /Integrated Farming System(IFS), for Supply of Agriculture- input on revolving mode, for Construction of poly house/shade net-either individual or community level etc. Moreover, Promotion of Organic formulations is a mighty step to encourage organic farming.

Objectives

  • To make accessibility of small & marginal farmers for irrigation to save the crop under rain fed condition, dry spell of kharif and mitigate the irrigation requirement in Rabi and summer season.

  • To increase crop productivity by enhancing the irrigation potential in dry spell of kharif and ensuring Rabi& summer crop.

  • To increase the crop productivity adopting SRI/SMI, Crop rotation and Change in cropping pattern.

  • To bring additional area under cultivation in Kharif, Rabi & summer (Increase in cropping intensity).

  • To supply the considerably safe drinking water/domestic use at HH level, reducing drudgery of women folk.

  • To build the capacities of farmers on survey, designing, construction of intake, pipe laying and joining during implementation phase.

  • To build the capacity of farmers on water harnessing, regulation and management issues.

  • To build the capacities of farmers to take up improved irrigated agriculture during Kharif, Rabi and summer season.

  • To institutionalize the farming communities into Water User Group/Producer Group/ Producer Company in a cluster for Post project management of Irrigation Infrastructure, collective marketing for maximization of returns and sustainability of the project.

  • To enhance household income of SGH members through various processing and value addition activities.

Apart from generating considerable employment during execution, the installation of project shall go in a long way in:-

  • Creating employment opportunity during each succeeding year i.e. @ 120 man-days on an average per acre double crops.

  • Striking at the very root cause of migration in the locality.

  • Boosting food production in the same land.

  • And also improving the socio-economic condition of the people which mainly depends on agriculture.
